The simpler "AOV × frequency × lifespan" formula you'll see on most sites gives you revenue lifetime value. It's the same shape — just missing the last multiplier. Same customer, two answers that differ by $51.20. If you'd sized your acquisition spending against the $128 figure, you'd overspend — because only $76.80 of that ever becomes gross profit you can reinvest.

Turning CLV into a decision: the LTV:CAC ratio

A CLV figure on its own is trivia. It becomes a decision the moment you divide it by what you paid to acquire the customer — your customer acquisition cost (CAC).

LTV:CAC = CLV ÷ CAC

According to Wall Street Prep, the CLV/CAC ratio should ideally be around 3.0x — meaning for every dollar spent on acquiring a customer, you should expect roughly three dollars of lifetime value back. Zendesk similarly reports that you should be shooting for a 3:1 ratio between CLV and customer acquisition cost. Continuing the example: say your blended CAC works out to $15.63. Using the honest, margin-basis CLV:
