Most calculators on the first page of Google stop at the formula and one toy example. That's fine for a definition, but it won't tell you whether your store is actually making money. This guide gives you the formula, a full worked example for a real ecommerce store, honest benchmarks, and — the part every other page skips — the costs that quietly eat your margin between "revenue" and "net profit."
The net profit margin formula
Net profit margin is one line:
Net profit margin % = (Net profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
Net profit (also called net income or the bottom line) is revenue minus all costs: cost of goods sold, shipping, payment fees, fulfillment labor, advertising, and fixed overhead such as salaries, rent, and software subscriptions.
A net profit margin calculator just automates that division. Type in revenue and total costs, and it returns the percentage. The output is only as trustworthy as the cost figure you enter — which is exactly where sellers go wrong.
Net profit vs gross profit vs contribution margin
Three different "margins" get confused constantly, and calculators rarely explain the difference. Each subtracts a different set of costs:
- Gross margin subtracts only cost of goods sold (COGS). It tells you whether a product is worth making.
- Contribution margin subtracts all variable costs — COGS plus shipping, fees, fulfillment, and ad spend. It tells you whether a product is worth selling through this channel.
- Net margin subtracts everything, including fixed overhead. It's the scoreboard: did the business make money?

A worked example: from revenue to net margin
Numbers make this concrete. Say you run a print-on-demand apparel store — call it Summit POD — with these monthly figures. (These are illustrative, not market data.)

Now run the calculator: net profit $2,000 ÷ revenue $40,000 × 100 = 5% net profit margin.
Notice how the number shrinks as you move down. Gross profit is $24,000, a 60% gross margin. After the variable costs of selling — shipping, fees, labor, and ads — contribution margin is $6,000. And after fixed overhead, net profit is just $2,000. Same store, three very different stories depending on which costs you subtract.
The trap: subtracting too few costs
Here's the mistake a bare calculator invites. If Summit only subtracted COGS, the "margin" would read 60%. If it stopped at contribution margin before overhead, 15%. The real net margin is 5%.
That's not a rounding error — it's the difference between a business owner who thinks they're printing money and one who knows a single bad ad month wipes out their profit. The costs most often left out are payment processing fees, fulfillment labor, returns, and fixed overhead. What's a good net profit margin?
There's no universal target, but you can benchmark against real sector data instead of guessing. According to NYU Stern's margin dataset compiled by Aswath Damodaran, the net margin for General Retail is about 5.61%, while the total-market average across all sectors sits near 9.74%.
So Summit POD's 5% net margin sits just below the general-retail benchmark — respectable for a physical-product business, but thin. There's little cushion for a bad ad month or a supplier price increase.
Margins vary wildly by industry. Omni Calculator's net profit margin page notes that U.S. information-services firms average around 13.4%, far above retail, because they carry almost no cost of goods. Software keeps more of every dollar than apparel ever will, so compare yourself to your own sector, not to a headline number.
For ecommerce specifically, single-digit net margins are common and not automatically bad. What matters is the trend and whether you have levers to widen it.
How to widen a thin net margin
Once your calculator shows the real number, the useful question is which cost to attack. Three levers move net margin most:
- Cut COGS, not just prices. For print-on-demand, that means negotiating supplier base costs or switching product mix — a far more durable lever than raising prices, which risks conversion.
- Raise contribution margin per order. Higher average order value, bundling, or better shipping economics all drop straight toward the net line.
