ARPU (average revenue per user) tells you what a customer is worth right now, over a fixed window; LTV (customer lifetime value) projects what they are worth across their whole relationship — and, done right, on profit rather than revenue. ARPU is a snapshot you can pull this month. LTV is a forecast that folds in repeat purchases, margin, and churn. Use ARPU to read current monetization, and LTV to decide how much you can afford to spend acquiring a customer.

Most guides on this topic stop at "ARPU is short-term, LTV is long-term" and leave it there. That's true, but it hides the two distinctions that actually change decisions: ARPU is usually measured on revenue while a good LTV is measured on margin, and ARPU is a fact about a period while LTV is a projection about a customer. Get those straight and the two metrics stop competing and start working together.

What ARPU actually measures

ARPU is the average revenue one active user or customer generated over a defined period — a month, a quarter, a year. The formula is simple:

ARPU = Revenue ÷ Active users (over the period)

Say you run a print-on-demand store. In one month you take $40,000 in revenue from 900 unique customers. Your ARPU is $40,000 ÷ 900 = $44.44 for that month.

Notice ARPU is not the same as average order value. If those 900 customers placed 1,000 orders between them, your AOV is $40,000 ÷ 1,000 = $40. ARPU runs higher than AOV here because some customers bought more than once, so revenue per customer exceeds revenue per order. ARPU counts people; AOV counts baskets. Keep the denominator honest — ARPU on "signups" is a different number than ARPU on "paying customers," so always state which.

The strength of ARPU is that it's real and immediate. You are not forecasting anything. It answers "how well are we monetizing the customers we have, right now?" That makes it a great pulse check for a pricing change, a new upsell, or a bundle test — you'll see the effect on ARPU inside a period.

What LTV actually measures

LTV (also called CLV or customer lifetime value — same metric, different acronym) is the total value a customer generates across their entire relationship with you. It's forward-looking, so it has to make assumptions about how often they'll buy and how long they'll stay.

The revenue-basis formula:

LTV = AOV × Purchase frequency × Customer lifespan

The margin-basis formula, which is the one worth using:

LTV = AOV × Purchase frequency × Customer lifespan × Gross-margin ratio

Say your average customer places 1.6 orders per year and sticks around for two years, and each order sells for $40 against $16 of product cost — a gross margin of ($40 − $16) ÷ $40 = 60%. On a revenue basis, LTV is $40 × 1.6 × 2 = $128. On a margin basis, it's $128 × 0.60 = $76.80. That gap — $128 versus $76.80 — is the single most common way LTV gets overstated. The revenue number flatters you; the margin number tells you what the customer is actually worth to the bank account.

The cleanest way to hold them apart: ARPU is a photograph, LTV is a projection built from a stack of photographs plus a guess about how many more you'll take. ARPU needs no assumptions and can be wrong about the future by design. LTV needs assumptions and is only as good as your frequency, lifespan, and margin inputs.

The profit angle both metrics need — and most articles skip

Here's the trap. Competing explainers compute ARPU on revenue, then compute LTV on revenue too, then compare LTV to a customer acquisition cost that came out of your ad account. You're now mixing a revenue number against a cost number, and the ratio looks far healthier than the business is.

Fix it by pushing both toward margin. Start from that $40 order. Subtract the $16 of product cost, then the variable costs of selling it — say $5 shipping, $1.60 in payment fees, and $1.40 of pick-and-pack, which is $8 more. What's left is $40 − $16 − $8 = $16 of contribution margin before ads, or $16 ÷ $40 = 40% of revenue. That $16 — not the $40, and not even the $24 gross profit — is the money a new customer's order actually frees up to cover acquisition and overhead. So a "profit ARPU" (contribution margin per customer) and a margin-basis LTV are the versions that let you make spending decisions without fooling yourself.

How ARPU and LTV connect

They're not rivals — one builds on the other. A margin-adjusted ARPU per period, extended across a customer's lifespan, is LTV:

LTV ≈ (Margin-adjusted ARPU per period) × Customer lifespan

And lifespan is usually derived from churn: lifespan ≈ 1 ÷ churn rate. If 8% of customers lapse each period, the average lifespan is 1 ÷ 0.08 ≈ 12.5 periods. That's why cutting churn is such a powerful LTV lever — it stretches the multiplier on every period of ARPU you already earn, without touching acquisition at all.

The payoff of a trustworthy LTV is the LTV:CAC ratio — lifetime value divided by what it cost to win the customer. Say total sales-and-marketing spend of $12,500 brought in 800 new customers; blended CAC is $12,500 ÷ 800 = $15.63. Against a margin-basis LTV of $76.80, that's $76.80 ÷ $15.63 = 4.9. A widely cited rule of thumb holds that an LTV:CAC around 3:1 is healthy, below 1:1 loses money, and above roughly 5:1 can signal you're under-investing in growth, according to Finsi's breakdown of the ratio. Run that same comparison on revenue-basis LTV and you'd get 8.2 — a number that would talk you into overspending. Same store, very different decision.

Because LTV hides a distribution — a handful of whales next to many one-and-done buyers — it's worth segmenting before you act on the average. An RFM analysis does exactly that, scoring customers on recency, frequency, and spend so you can see who the average is smoothing over.

When to use which

Reach for ARPU when the question is about now: did the price change land, is the new bundle lifting revenue per customer, how does this month's monetization compare to last. It's fast, factual, and needs no forecasting.

Reach for LTV when the question is about how much to spend: what can you pay to acquire a customer, which channels are worth scaling, whether a cohort is improving over time. LTV is the number that sets acquisition budgets, and it only works if you keep it on margin and keep your assumptions honest.

How does churn affect LTV?

Directly. Customer lifespan is roughly 1 ÷ churn rate, and lifespan is a multiplier in the LTV formula. Lower churn stretches lifespan, which raises LTV without spending an extra dollar on acquisition — which is why retention is often the highest-leverage way to grow lifetime value.
